The No. 21 Indiana Hoosiers women's basketball team secured an impressive 71-57 victory over the No. 19 Tennessee Lady Vols in the 2023 Elevance Health Women's Fort Myers Tip-off on Thursday.
Despite facing a formidable opponent in Tennessee, the Hoosiers displayed a dominant performance, particularly in their three-point shooting. Sophomore guard Yarden Garzon, known for her long-range prowess, led the charge, sinking five three-pointers for a career-high 23 points. Her hot shooting ignited Indiana's offense, stretching the floor and creating opportunities to score in the paint.
Indiana's interior presence was also instrumental in their victory. AP Preseason All-American graduate student forward Mackenzie Holmes contributed 17 points, as the Lady Vols were forced to defend the perimeter, leaving the paint vulnerable. The Hoosiers capitalized on this, outscoring Tennessee 32-18 in points in the paint.
Tennessee, despite the absence of their leading scorer and rebounder Rickea Jackson, struggled to find offensive consistency, shooting just 35.9% from the field. The Hoosiers' stout defensive effort, anchored by Holmes and senior forward Sydney Parrish, limited Tennessee's opportunities to attack the rim, forcing them to rely on three-pointers, which they converted at a dismal 6-for-20 rate.
Indiana's victory over Tennessee showcased their ability to adapt and respond to challenges. After their previous game against No. 4 Stanford University, where they struggled to score in the paint, the Hoosiers made a concerted effort to attack the rim, resulting in a significant improvement in their interior scoring.
The Hoosiers will continue their season on Saturday when they face Princeton University in Fort Myers.
